Orthotics, or Surgical Appliances as the subject is often called, is the supply and fitting of an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuro-muscular and skeletal system.
The orthotic service in this Trust principally involves the supply and fitting of orthopaedic footwear, a range of callipers, splints, surgical collars and the supply of wigs.
Patients are referred via the clinician who is treating them in this Trust. The Surgical Appliance Department does not accept referrals directly from GPs who must refer patients to a hospital clinician.
Once patients are referred to Surgical Appliances, they are assessed by trained orthotists and supported by a surgical appliance officer and technicians based at St Peter’s Hospital.
Jane Saunders and Manning and Salts Healthcare each supply the services of a trained orthotist at St Peter’s Hospital and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust employs the surgical appliance officer and technical support staff.
