The Service at the Trust
Written by Pathology Manager

The pathology service provided by our three star Trust serves a population approaching 500,000 covering an area of north west Surrey and Middlesex including:
  • Ashford,
  • Staines,
  • Feltham,
  • Egham,
  • Chertsey,
  • Weybridge,
  • Woking and
  • Walton on Thames.

We perform in excess of 4¼ million tests each year, utilising a staff of 235 individuals (189 whole time employed) across five major departments, and are responsible for an annual budget of £11m.

An investment of £1.7m in 2001-2 funded the complete refurbishment of the laboratories with each department now housed in a purpose-designed suite. The brand new Cytology suite is our "jewel in the crown", and has been designed to allow easy access for wheelchair users.

Pathology has recently undergone a major auto-analyser procurement exercise, which has resulted in the replacement of all Haematology, Serology and Biochemistry equipment during the latter part of 2002. We now boast a fully roboticised Biochemistry department, one of the few in the country.

All laboratories are either fully accredited or conditionally with Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd (CPA). All departments have Health Professions Council (HPC) training status.

Following reorganisation in April 2002, the Pathology service operates out of the main centralised laboratory at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey. A satellite service is also offered on our second site at Ashford Hospital in Middlesex, dealing mainly with inpatient and urgent Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry requests.

The Pathology service is headed by the Director of Pathology (Dr Andrew Laurie) and managed by the Pathology Service Manager (Steve Shiel).

Emma Mitchell and Gill Oliver, manage the Pathology Central Office and would be the first people to contact with any query (01932 723062 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Careers in Pathology

We have job opportunities for trained Biomedical Scientist (BMS) and support staff. We need staff to take blood specimens (Phlebotomists), staff to receive those specimens in our labs (Central Reception workers), and staff to assist in the laboratories (Medical Lab Assistants). In addition, opportunities exist in other supporting roles (Drivers, Stores, IT, Admin & Clerical, etc).

Each of the departments is headed by a Lead Consultant and managed by the Lead Biomedical Scientist (BMS).
