Isolation Policy
Written by The Infection Control Team

The purpose of isolating patients is to prevent the transmission of micro-organisms (bacteria or viruses) that they maybe infected or colonised with to:
  • Other patients
  • Hospital visitors
  • Hospital staff (who may become infected or colonised themselves)
The physical isolation of patients alone without additional infection control precautions is not sufficient enough to minimise the spread of micro-organisms.

Basic principles of isolation care and implementation of standard infection control precautions must be implemented in order to minimise the risk of transmission. This policy will also address the use of risk assessment to facilitate optimal use of isolation facilities and demonstrate consistent evidence based decision-making.
