The spread of infection via hands is well established (Larson 1988, Ayliffe 2000). Hand hygiene is one of the most important procedures for preventing the spread of disease. Hands are the principle route by which cross infection occurs. Effective hand hygiene results in significant reduction in the carriage of potential pathogens on the hands and can therefore decrease the incidence of preventable healthcare associated infection leading to a reduction in patient morbidity and mortality (Pratt et al 2007).
