Details of the Response

Thank you for your request to Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust regarding Mixed-Sex wards

The Trust’s Programme Lead Bed Modelling and Deputy Head of Nursing have responded:
  1. The total number of patient beds that the Trust has in mixed-sex wards

    In line with DoH guidance on Delivering Single Sex Accommodation, the Trust has virtually eliminated all mixed sex accommodation by operating 8 same sex (either all male or all female) wards comprising of 219 beds.

    In addition there are 14 wards of single sex rooms and bays comprising of 274 beds.

    The accommodation offered to all inpatients is based on single sex occupancy within rooms or bays including single sex toilet and washing facilities – the room configuration can range from single cubicle to a 6 bedded bay.

    There are occasions when the need to provide urgent and specialist clinical care takes precedence over single sex accommodation, these include patients being admitted to;

    • Medical High Dependency,
    • Coronary Care Unit,
    • Acute Brain Injury Unit and
    • Emergency Assessment areas.

    These areas total 31 beds.

    There are, however, no exceptions to providing high standards of privacy and dignity in the Trust and steps have been taken to address appropriate screening of patients in these areas.

  2. The total number of patient beds that the Trust has in all wards.

    Total number of beds 588 (inclusive of all paediatric wards)

  3. Whether the Trust's maintains a policy on patients being bathed, or otherwise seen to, by orderlies or nursing assistants of the opposite gender. If so, what is that policy?

    The Trust’s Chaperoning Guidelines for Clinical Staff has an appendix entitled Caring for Patients of the Opposite Sex: Guidelines for Nursing and Midwifery Staff (Appendix 1) which covers this issue.
