  2. Number of complaints received about regarding standard of care and complications arising from surgery relating to gynaecology problems broken down by nature of complaint, stages e.g. stage one to the last stage

The number of complaints received relating to gynaecology problems for the period 1 Dec 2007-30 November 2010 is 11

    The breakdown is as follows:

6 complaints regarding alleged complication following surgery (5 suffered recognised complications, 1 a rare allergic reaction). No major failings in care.
2 complaints regarding follow up care following surgery. Minor failings in care/communication.
2 complaints regarding patient’s condition did not improve following surgery. Treatment appropriate.
1 complaint regarding unexpected outcome following surgery – patient suffered a recognised complication and required further surgery. Lack of nursing care - apologies were given.

All were resolved at first stage and none were referred to the Ombudsman for second stage review (to date).

  3. Number of complaints which resulted in legal action e.g complaint of negligence

    None (see 2 above).

  4. Number of complaints resolved in favour of the complainant

It is difficult to advise which were ‘resolved in favour of the complainant’ as in all cases the Trust will seek to apologise that a person has found it necessary to complain – in cases where there have been no failings in care, the Trust will seek to offer a full, open and thorough response and offer reassurance where treatment has been appropriate. Where failings identified we will apologise and detail the action taken to address failings where identified.

  5. Total amount of money expended on resolving complaint

It is not possible to calculate this as complaints handling is an administrative function carried out by Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

  6. Total amount of money paid out to complainant in compensation as a result of legal action

Compensation in respect of settled negligence claims against Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a matter for the NHS Litigation Authority and they can be contacted via this link: http://www.nhsla.com/foi/
