The Department of Health introduced the Choose and Book system in 2004. Choose and Book is a service that allows patients to choose their hospital or clinic and book their own appointment. When you and your GP agree that you need an appointment, you can choose which hospital you go to taking into account factors such as location or waiting times. You will also be able to choose the date and time of your appointment.
All of this can be done within the surgery as the sophistication of the software allows a direct link between the GP’s clinical system and the hospital’s booking system. Or if preferred, patients can book their appointments in the comfort of their own home via the Choose and Book website or dedicated telephone hotline. Once they have decided which appointment to book a confirmation letter can be printed out there and then instead of having to wait several weeks for one to arrive via the post only to find out it falls on a day they cannot make.
