The front entrance of St Peter’s Hospital came to a brief standstill as nine of our 18 Matrons posed for photographs in their new red uniforms, with Caroline Becher, Chief Nurse (pictured centre).

The Matron role was re-introduced to Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust in 2004. We began with just seven Matrons, but have now increased this number to a grand total of 18, which includes not only the wards but also areas such as Outpatients, Theatres, Emergency Services and Day Surgery.

Last year (2009), our new Chief Nurse, Caroline Becher, re-launched the role of our Matrons to ensure a better experience for our patients and their families.

As part of this re-launch, new red uniforms were introduced making the Matrons immediately more visible to patients and their families and visitors. These new uniforms are just a small part of the work we are doing to reinforce and strengthen the Matrons’ roles which they are developing together. When Caroline joined the Trust in June 2009, she immediately prioritised the role of the Matrons and has publicly stated her determination to reinforce traditional nursing values to ensure our patients are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The Matrons provide leadership to the hundreds of nurses and support staff who work across our two hospitals and are responsible for the quality of patient care and experience, including clinical standards, food on the wards, cleaning and overall infection control.

Said Caroline: “Re-launching the role of our Matrons has been top of my agenda since joining Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals in June (2009). The visual impact of distinctively dressed Matrons makes a practical step towards empowering and strengthening their role. It’s a step that has been welcomed by the Matrons themselves and by the public.”
