Your Dedicated Service
Written by Children's Services Manager

The Paediatric A&E Department is situated within the general A&E Department in the Prince Edward Wing at St. Peter’s Hospital and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This dedicated Paediatric Department treats over 20,000 children a year with many different conditions and the friendly team of Doctors and Nurses work together to make sure the children receive the best possible care.

Patients may arrive by ambulance, be referred by their G.P., or self-present.  Patients will be triaged by a Paediatric nurse and will then be seen by a doctor.  If further diagnostic tests are required – such as a blood test or x-ray there will probably be a wait to be seen, but staff will ensure patients and their families/carers are updated with information.

Paediatric doctors may ask for an opinion for doctors from the surgical, orthopaedic and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams if they feel this is necessary.

There are also 2 nurse practitioners in the Department who can see children with minor injuries.

If a child needs to be admitted this will usually be to Ash ward on the Paediatric Unit or arrangements will be made for transfer to the appropriate Trust for further treatment.

If you do have any problems, worries or queries whilst you are in the Department please ask any member of the clinical team.
