Role of hospital pathology departments highlighted during National Science and Engineering Week

The role of hospital pathology departments in the identification of waterborne and water related diseases will be discussed next week during National Science and Engineering Week (9th – 18th March 2007).  The theme for the week is ‘Water’ and local schools have agreed to hear about how these serious diseases are diagnosed by biomedical scientists working in hospitals.

Gill Hall, Pathology Network Training Facilitator, based in the Pathology Department at St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertseysays: “There are many exciting career opportunities in pathology in the NHS.   Biomedical scientists can make a real difference to peoples lives with the fast and accurate diagnosis of illnesses caused by waterborne pathogens.   At St. Peter’s and other hospitals there are exciting opportunities in the Pathology service.”

The University of Surrey in partnership with the Surrey Pathology Network offers an Applied Biomedical Science BSc; with the possibility of an NHS sponsored scholarship.    The presentation will be of particular interest to A-level science students and is being made to:

·     St. David’s Girls School, Ashford on Tuesday 13th March at 09:00hrs;

·     Brigidine SchoolWindsor on Tuesday 13th March at 10:50hrs; and

·     Brooklands College, Weybridge on Wednesday 14th March at 14:00hrs.
