Trust Board Approves New Mortuary Plan
Written by Communications Team

Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has approved the building of a new mortuary and associated facilities on the St Peter’s Hospital site at Chertsey, Surrey.   The Trust is seeking to replace mortuary facilities built in the 1940’s on the edge of the hospital site and build a new facility more central to the main hospital buildings on the St Peter’s Hospital site.  This project forms part of ongoing plans to reconfigure and re-provide healthcare services on the St Peter’s Hospital site.  The new mortuary development is part of the Trust’s plans to develop and enhance the hospital services in the area.

Glenn Douglas, Chief Executive at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust commented: “We have long recognised that our mortuary facilities, including the arrangements for the next of kin to see the deceased, are not as good as we would wish.   A new building, more central to the main buildings on the St. Peter’s Hospital site, will enable us to provide a better service for those who have been bereaved and be good for staff for whom we need to improve working conditions.    This decision demonstrates our commitment to invest for the future and develop modern facilities for people who live and work in and visitSurrey.”

Subject to a revised planning application submitted this week the building work could start in November 2007 and the new mortuary would be complete in early 2009.  The total cost of the project will be £4×89m.  The development allows for further expansion in future years should the need arise.
