£5,000 and rising!

Sponsorship money has been coming in following the “Joined-Up Walk” organised by the Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust orthopaedic department recently.

The National Trust land at Runnymede was the setting for the two mile walk – just days before the first outbreak of foot and mouth disease, which has now seen the area closed to the public.  The event was more than just a walk with fun activities for children and items for sale including wood-turned ornaments and home-made jams and preserves. The Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Hugh Meares spent time talking to both organisers and participants, and he met “George” the skeleton who was the event’s mascot!

Said Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Arshad Khaleel: “This is certainly a step in the right direction towards achieving our goal!  We had magnificent support from our staff and the public and I would like to thank all of those who contributed to the success of the Joined-Up Walk.  We were particularly pleased to welcome the Mayor of Runnymede to the event, as we know he has a busy schedule.  The National Trust land at Runnymede provided a beautiful setting for what was a very happy event.”

So far £5,000 has come in from sponsorship of the walkers.  The money will be used to buy a mobile scanner that will be used to look for blood clots following joint replacement surgery on our patients on the orthopaedic wards. The £4,000 mobile scanner can detect a blood clot before it leads to a thrombosis.

Some of the funds will also be used to carry out research into when it is safe to drive after joint replacement surgery. This is a question often asked by patients and it is hoped that the research will make a significant contribution to finding the answer in some areas of joint replacement.
