Hospital Radio Wey has been successfully test broadcasting on the internet for several months now, and with the help of Whitegates Nursing Home in Laleham, who have agreed to be a pilot site for a new initiative, they are now using this advance in technology to live up to their station’s Constitution. The objectives of the Charity, which was founded in 1965, are to provide a broadcasting service for hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, residential homes, in the boroughs that they serve. Chairman of Hospital Radio Wey, Stuart Jones, said: “‘The setting-up costs to broadcast for places like Whitegates Nursing Home have been far too high in the past. But now we can broadcast over the internet, it is so much easier and cheaper.” Clive Stevens, who presented the first show for Whitegates last Friday, (Sep 21) said: “We will collect the requests from the residents, and play them back to them at the same time every week. The first show was a real success, I had to cram 14 requests into one hour, which included Frank Ifield, Schubert and some Rock ‘n;’ Roll. We are looking for other venues to broadcast to, so provided they have a broadband connection, we’d love them to get in touch with us.” In order to recoup the costs of the internet broadcasting, Hospital Radio Wey ask for a small annual donation. Jean Saunders, Activities Co-Ordinator at Whitegates, said: “'This is a great opportunity for the residents here as they all love music. It's particularly enjoyable for them to have personal music requests broadcast and for birthdays it's great to have a special mention. Liz Mendelsshonn, Whitegates Manager, and all the staff are enthusiastic about this service and there's lots of discussion about favourite songs and tunes. We are very pleased to be part of this new project.” |
