“Volunteers are an essential part of this Trust,” says Trust Chairman Clive ThompsonCBE in his introduction (page 3) to the newly published 2007 Voluntary Services Magazine for Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals.   The magazine recognises the invaluable role played by the 500 volunteers who give their time freely to support patients, visitors and staff at the two hospitals.   Clive goes on: “We highly value the work volunteers do, in the wards, with the trolleys, in the chaplaincy, clinic support, porters and receptionists.   And through other activities volunteers bring funds and support to the Trust to do things the NHS cannot do.  A big thank you to all our volunteers!”

The magazine highlights the wide variety of roles undertaken by volunteers, whether it be at the bedside, in clinics or a long way from where the clinicians operate, and includes the work of:

·          the Friends of St. Peter’s (page 15) and Ashford League of Friends (page 17)

·          the Chaplaincy Volunteer Team (pages 19 and 21)

·          Pets as Therapy (page 23)

·          WRVS Coffee Shop (page 27)

·          Hospital Radio Wey (page 29)

·          raising funds for the Stephanie Marks Appeal (page 39)

Some of the services provided by volunteers are outlined on pages 7 and 9 and on pages 41, 43 to 45, 47 to 49, 51 and 53 there are profiles of individual volunteers and the many different roles people undertake for the two hospitals.

Commenting on the publication of the 2007 Magazine Voluntary Services Manager Karen Marsden says: “This publication, made possible through the generosity of our advertisers, gives us the opportunity to highlight our good fortune in having the commitment and support of many members of the local community to help patients, visitors and staff.   We are very grateful for this support and hope, in return, that all our volunteers gain enjoyment and satisfaction from being part of a large team working with the same aims in mind – the wellbeing of our patients.”
