‘Eyes Right’ Founder Recognised For Her Outstanding Contribution
Written by Communications Team

‘Eyes Right’ founder, Frances Davies has been recognised by the outgoing Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Hugh Meares, for her outstanding contribution to the Borough.

In his speech of commendation on 15th May, in one of his last acts as Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Meares said:

“Frances Davies has worked tirelessly to raise money for charity, and has continued to do so even though recently she has been very unwell.  Frances founded Eyes Right in 2003 to raise extra money for St. Peter’s Eye Unit in Chertsey. Despite the massive NHS budget, funds are still tight to purchase top line optical equipment.  By 2007, Eyes Right had raised enough to purchase over £66,000 worth of equipment and in April 2008 they were able to order the much awaited Heidelberg RetinalTomographer (£30,000 piece of equipment).

“This is a state of the art machine which helps diagnose and monitor glaucoma. As approximately one third of patients visiting the Eye Unit at St. Peter’s have glaucoma, it will enhance the quality of care provided to these people. Early diagnosis is the key to the prevention of blindness in patients with this condition. We are well on our way to purchasing one!

“Her next goal is an O.C.T machine – Ocular Computerised Tomographer for looking at the Retina and Macular for Diabetes and Macular degeneration – another £30,000 and this has been one of the charities which I have supported in my Mayoral year.”

Consultant Ophthalmologist Mike Tappin comments: “Frances’ support for the Eye Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital has been outstanding.   Through her company, Principal People she has engaged with the local community and businesses, raising thousands of pounds so that we can improve our care for patients.   This recognition is well deserved.”
