Planning Permission paves the way for the new Stephanie Marks Diabetes Resource Centre

Supporters should be thrilled to read that their five years of hard work were validated yesterday when Runnymede Borough Council granted planning permission for the new, state-of-the-art Stephanie Marks Diabetes Resource Centre. Construction work should begin towards late autumn when the 3 month tender process has been completed. This momentous news coincides with National Diabetes Week 8th – 14th June.

Located within the grounds of St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey the new two-storey Resource Centre (artist’s impression above) will improve treatment and patient care and also provide education and research facilities for this escalating condition.

Sir Ian Botham says, “I was delighted back in 2003 to be asked to be Patron of The Stephanie Marks Appeal.  Since my daughter Becky was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in her teens, it has had a direct impact on our entire family.  We know first-hand how important it is to make people aware of this potentially devastating condition.  Medical professionals based at the Centre will give good quality care and essential guidance on self-management enabling patients to live life to the full.”

Clive Thompson, Chair commented, “This is a fantastic way to celebrate our fifth anniversary. Despite talk of changes within the NHS which are no longer a threat, and the current harsh economic climate, our supporters have overwhelmed us with their generosity and commitment, which provided sufficient funds to apply for planning permission.  Now granted, their dedication will be rewarded with improved patient care and fast access to treatment.  This project was defined several years ago but now finds itself clearly in the mainstream of Lord Darzi’s proposals.

The team will continue to raise funds as money for the IT system is still to be secured and we want to upgrade the proposed wheel chair platform with a fully functional passenger lift.
