Contributions in lieu of flowers at the funeral of a well known local person have made it possible for an additional piece of equipment to be added to the resuscitation trolley that is always on standby in the physiotherapy gym at St. Peter’s Hospital,Chertsey.

In her lifetime Jean Mitchell was very appreciative of the treatment her husband Edwin received from the NHS and particularly of the support he experienced from the Cardiac Rehabilitation team at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey.   Following valve surgery he benefited from the confidence-building cardiac rehabilitation course always coming away from the sessions chatting, laughing and feeling so much better - which his family greatly appreciated.

When Mrs Mitchell, of St. Johns, Woking, died suddenly in November 2007 her husband and daughters agreed that donations made in lieu of flowers at her funeral should go to the cardiac rehabilitation team.

Said her youngest daughter, Denise: “Dad and I were very pleased to go up to the hospital and see the suction unit that they have bought.  And it was nice to go to the beautiful Chapel Garden where Mum and I often waited when Dad was coming in for regular treatment.”

Cardiac Specialist Nurse Liz Murphy said the £430 has funded a suction unit for clearing airways in an emergency. It will be kept on the resuscitation trolley which is kept in the physiotherapy gym.  The gym is used by a wide range of patients as well as the twice-weekly cardiac rehabilitation scheme patients.

Said Liz: “This will be a very useful addition to our resuscitation trolley and we do thank all those who contributed in her memory.”

The Cardiac Rehabilitation team run twice weekly rehabilitation courses throughout the year for about 400 patients who have either had planned heart surgery or what are known as “acute cardiac events.”   The one-and-a-half-hour sessions are very physical with three different levels of fitness circuits for the patients to use including a “staircase”, exercise bike and treadmill. After six weeks they generally feel far better about getting back to doing normal things and not worrying about increasing their cardio-vascular function.

Mrs Mitchell was well known in the Woking area, having worked in the town centre branch of Sainsbury’s for 25 years before her retirement.
