Non-Executive Director sought by local acute hospital Trust
Written by Communications Lead

The New Year brings the opportunity for an exciting chance to contribute to the running of local health services, and particularly for someone who has a special interest in the work of acute hospitals.

A Non-Executive Director is being sought for Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is being advertised by the independent Appointments Commission which handles the recruitment to all Non-Executive Director posts in NHS Trusts. This Non-Executive Director vacancy follows the appointment of Non-Executive Director Aileen McLeish to the post of Trust Chairman on 1 October 2008.

Local people - particularly from the boroughs of Elmbridge, Hounslow, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, and Woking - who have gained senior level expertise in the private, public or voluntary sectors are offered an exceptional opportunity to put their talents to good use by making a positive contribution to the health services available to people in their community.   The Trust serves a population of around 400,000, has an annual budget of £200 million and employs over 3,200 staff.

Said Ms McLeish: “In recent months we have appointed three new Non-Executive Directors and are now seeking to compliment their talents by bringing on board someone with senior level experience in any of the following areas: consumer and customer focus, patient advocacy, public relations and media management, local government, fundraising, human resources, legal expertise or  education and training.

“Speaking from experience, I know how important it is to have people from the local community contributing their specialist skills to the running of their local hospital.  At Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust we value and promote diversity, equality of opportunity and appointments made on merit.  It is our belief that the best boards are those that reflect the communities they serve.”

The Trust is looking to achieve Foundation Trust status in October 2009.  NHS Foundation Trusts are a key part of the reform programme in the NHS.  They are autonomous organisations with greater freedom to decide how to improve their services and can retain any surpluses they generate, or borrow money to support these investments.  These freedoms mean NHS Foundation Trusts can better shape their healthcare services around local needs and priorities.

Candidates will also need to demonstrate a range of competencies required to contribute effectively at board level including strategic thinking, team working and excellent communication skills.  The time commitment is typically two-and-a-half days each month and remuneration is currently £6,005 pa.

Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust is hosting an information session for candidates on 15 December at 6.30pm at St Peter’s Hospital. For more information please contact Gail Soliman on: 01932 722217.  This information session will play no part in the selection process. The closing date for applications is 2 January 2009 and interviews will be held on 23 January 2009. For more information please visit the website www.appointments.org.uk/vacancies  or www.strictlyboardroom.co.uk  or call 0870 240 3802 quoting the reference SE8657 for an information pack.   Further information about the Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals can be found at www.ashfordstpeters.nhs.uk.

The Trust and Appointments Commission would particularly welcome applications from women, people from the black and minority ethnic communities and people with a disability to promote full community involvement in the activities of the hospitals.
