They really do want people to get on their bikes – in the physiotherapy gym at Ashford Hospital! And this very healthy form of exercise is being supported by the Ashford Hospital League of Friends and the hospital’s cardiology department.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at Ashford Hospital was recently supplied with six new exercise bikes, funded jointly by the Ashford Cardiac Support Group and Ashford Hospital League of Friends.

Said Cardiac Specialist Nurse Angela Murphy: “Situated in the main physiotherapy gym, this equipment will be regularly used by the Cardiac Rehabilitation group and other patients attending the physiotherapy department for a wide range of complaints. These bikes will assist patients who are attending the exercise programme, following their recent cardiac event. We would like to thank both groups for their very generous assistance in purchasing the bikes.”

“Patient’s attend the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme for a number of weeks having suffered a heart attack, heart surgery or other cardiac event, and learn how to safely perform exercise. This new equipment will assist with them performing cardiovascular exercise safely and comfortably. The bikes are of a high quality and will hopefully last as long as the previous bikes which were approximately twenty years old.”

A “cardiac event” may be a heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery or a recent diagnosis of unstable angina. The rehabilitation programme lasts a variable amount of time, depending on the individual patient.
