For adults and children alike, the main reason for patients needing attention in both the adult and children’s A&E departments at Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust over Christmas and Boxing Days has been respiratory problems.
In both areas shortness of breath and other respiratory problems like bronchitis, together with some youngsters affected by diarrhoea and vomiting, kept staff busy.
Said Business Centre Manager for Emergency Services Jean Haire: “It has been extremely busy and stressful and although we have been short staffed the care provided to patients and their relatives by our teams and the ambulance service has been exceptional. They have supported each other, and continue to do so.
“The nursing and medical staff within our emergency services area has been running on low numbers as flu had affected staff, and they have worked very hard and should be proud that they have managed to provide a safe, efficient and caring service.”
Santa brought a surprise gift for the emergency services, kindly donated by Tesco. Said Jean: “On Christmas Eve we were surprised and thrilled to receive two very large crates of chocolates, confectionary and other goodies which has been widely shared among emergency services staff.”
