New Pool Makes Waves!
Written by Communications Team

Yesterday Olympic rower Andy Triggs-Hodge MBE opened the newly refurbished physiotherapy hydrotherapy pool at Ashford Hospital.  Rower Andy is of course no stranger to water. Amongst many other rowing achievements Andy stroked  Oxford to victory in the 2005 Boat Race, has twice won the rowing world championships and last year in the Beijing Olympics stroked the coxless fours GB team to  a gold medal.

The hydrotherapy pool is of great benefit to a whole variety of patients, including those recovering from orthopaedic operations and those suffering from severe stiffness of joints.  The pool is also very beneficial to young patients with neurological conditions where the weightlessness of the body in the water enables them to move and exercise freely, and the water also has a pain relieving effect.   The stroke unit have also used the pool for a research case study which has enabled them to present a paper to the Physiotherapy Congress as its uses are so many and varied.   “This is a wonderful facility for Ashford Hospital,” commented Physiotherapy Superintendent Julia Farnworth.

Patient Alan Jenkins of Ashford suffered a serious shoulder injury last year.  Part of his rehabilitation included sessions in the pool.  Mr Jenkins said; “The pool therapy was very successful in helping in my recovery.  I injured my shoulder last July. It has taken 8 months to recover but I received first class treatment at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Trust and I am back to work soon.  All hospitals should have a pool like this.”
