After a career that has included nursing and later the Civil Service, Pauline Hallaways has enjoyed the last 12 years as a volunteer in the National Health Service.
Said Pauline: “After a busy working life always working with people, I found that when I retired in 1997 I still needed that involvement. I work one afternoon a week in the Breast Clinic at Ashford Hospital and over the years the clinic has changed enormously, as there are now many more patients. In the past I hadn’t realised the number of males coming to the clinic as we have nowadays.” Pauline, 77, of Laleham, enjoys greeting people when doing reception work and her role contains a good variety of jobs.
Said Pauline: “I greet people at reception and have their files ready so that the patients are seen in the correct order. The role involves various things including patients fill in their questionnaire, and informing them of any waiting period that might occur.
“There are other things to do like sometimes directing patients to x-ray and other areas. I like to think that what we do as volunteers does make a difference to both patients and staff, and that other people looking for a worthwhile occupation in retirement would find volunteering equally rewarding.”
