Best Ever Patient Environment Scores
Written by Communications Team

Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust has achieved their best ever results in this year’s patient environment and action team inspection. Conducted on behalf of the National Patient Safety Agency this year’s inspection, published earlier this week, gave the Trust an ‘excellent’ score for food, and ‘good’ scores for both environment and patient privacy and dignity at both Ashford and St. Peter’s hospitals.

These annual assessments focus on key patient areas such as infection prevention and control, patient privacy and dignity, food and accommodation, and are important indicators in assessing the patient environment. Inspections are carried out by independent teams which include patient representatives.

Said William Britton, Hotel Services Manager: “We are delighted with this year’s PEAT results which demonstrate our commitment to improving the patient environment. As well as providing high quality clinical care, it’s every bit as important to make sure our patients are seen and treated in comfortable and clean surroundings, and are able to enjoy good quality food in an environment where their privacy and dignity is upheld. We have made some real investments and thus improvements over the course of the last year and I am delighted to see this borne out by these impressive results.”

Improvements and initiatives include ensuring well-stocked anti-bacterial gel dispensers throughout the hospital, the introduction of disposable cubicle curtains which can be quickly and easily replaced and the reintroduction of a hot meal choice at supper after listening to patient feedback.

The Trust is also part way through a significant programme of internal works to improve the ward areas, in particular to ensure men and women are able to be accommodated in separate areas. The programme is scheduled to be completed by April 2010.
