Maternity Unit Wins User Award
Written by Tamba

Tamba are please to announce that Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust is the first maternity unit in the UK to win two Gold Tamba Maternity Excellence Awards. They won their first Gold Award in 2006 and learnt in July 2009 that they have been awarded another Gold standard.

To achieve this, the maternity unit produced a portfolio of evidence covering 38 criteria over seven areas of care.

These included:
  • Written multiple birth guidelines and systems in place, with staff equipped to implement them.

  • Written information provided to parents along with providing parent education sessions that address the needs of those expecting multiples.

  • Demonstrating that appropriate infant feeding advice is offered to those feeding more than one baby and that support is given both during the hospital stay and on discharge.

Tamba president Judi Linney, who has a background in midwifery and public health, personally conducted the audit of the unit which included interviewing parents, local twins clubcs officers and staff said:

"Our congratulations go out to Naomi Warrington and the team of midwives, doctors and staff at Ashford and St Peter's Maternity Unit. They have been excellent in supporting multiple birth parents and are well deserving of this award. We look forward to other Maternity Units adopting these high standards of care."

The care offered by Ashford and St Peter's was judged as gold level as they provide four sessions of multiple-specific parent education that includes a DVD tour of the special care facilities, have an Infant Feeding Advisor who can give multiple-specific support both in the antenatal and postnatal period, and they have excellent links withTwins Clubs and Tamba. This ensures that prospective parents can benefit from the support of those who have already recently given birth to twins or triplets themselves.

Expectant parents can now download a free Tamba Healthy Multiple Pregnancy Guide at www.tamba.org.uk which has also just been launched.
