On Friday 21st August, the maternity department at St Peter’s Hospital enjoyed a visit from Dame Christine Beasley DBE, Chief Nursing Officer for England. During her visit Dame Christine saw how maternity services at the hospital had improved over the last two years following a vigorous programme of change. She was particularly interested in the specialist service provided for twins and multiple births, which follows the hospital’s recent achievement of becoming the only maternity unit in the UK to win a second Gold Tamba (Twins and Multiple Births Association) Maternity Excellence Award. ![]() Esther Devito with daughters Anna and Eve, Dame Christine Beasley and Dr Tom Brooker who delivered the twins on Wednesday 19th August Throughout the morning Dame Christine visited all areas of the maternity wing, including the labour ward and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She spoke with many staff and patients and also met some new mothers who made a special trip back to St Peter’s with their twins to meet her and share their experiences of the maternity service.
Eileen Nolan, Associate Director of Maternity Services accompanied Dame Christine on her tour and said: “Dame Christine was very impressed with everything she saw and everyone she met, in particular with the high level of support we offer for women with twins or multiple births. The whole maternity department has worked very hard over the past two years to improve the service for women and this special visit really highlighted the success of some of the changes we have made.” |
