The Neonatal Transfer Service is delighted to announce that from 5th October 2009, the current 12 hour service will be extended to a 24 hour service. The new service will enable mothers and babies to be as close to their homes as possible whilst receiving the level of care required. Vanessa Attrell, Perinatal Network Manager of SECSCG says: ”Since 2003 when this service launched, our vision has been to provide quality neonatal services and progress to a 24 hour service. This is in line with DH/NHS 2009 Taskforce ’Principles for Quality Neonatal Services’ due for publication in the autumn. This additional service is a huge accomplishment for our teams, whom all worked tremendously hard to get us to this stage. It also means that transfer services will now be available at all times and to all units within the networks”. Within South East Coast there are three teams based at Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham, St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey and Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. These teams are staffed and operate independently of the units where they are based. There is also a dedicated ambulance located at each base operated by South East Coast Ambulance Service. This service is commissioned by South East Coast Specialised Commissioning Group working on behalf of the eight Primary Care Trusts in Kent, Surrey & Sussex and jointly contracted with the three acute trusts and South East Coast Ambulance Service. Neonatal services are available within sixteen hospitals in South East Coast region and all hospitals are part of Perinatal Networks. There are two networks within region, Kent & Medway and Surrey & Sussex both of which have excellent clinical engagement. The Neonatal Transfer Service has representation on both network boards as well as an NTS management group who have led in this service development. The cot finding and team co-ordination is organised by the Emergency Bed Service who are hosted by London Ambulance Service.
