Dr Foster reports low mortality rate for Trust
Written by Communications Team

About the recent information published in the Dr Foster 2009 Hospital Guide, Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust Medical Director, Dr Mike Baxter, said: “This year’s guide shows that the Trust is ranked in the top third of Trusts nationally and underlines our commitment to offering high quality care with the safety of our patients as an absolute priority.”

“The Trust continues to have a very low standardised mortality rate, which is actually one of the lowest in the country (14 out of 147) and the lowest in the South East Coast area. This has been the case for some time and reflects the expertise of our staff and their dedication to delivering good quality care for all patients.”

“We have been ranked in the top third of hospitals nationally (43 of 147) in this new Dr Foster index of patient safety. This measures data other than mortality rates to determine a calculated safety index. On some of these measures the Trust does not score as highly as it does in terms of direct mortality rates.”

“However, we regularly monitor our own performance and are aware of the areas that need to be improved. For example, the Trust does not achieve the target of 100% of patients with fractured neck of femur receiving surgery within 48 hours of admission. We are working hard to address this and making month-on-month improvements with a rate of 90% for this target delivered last month.”

“Providing good end-of-life care to meet the needs and expectations of patients is very important to us and we have a large specialised palliative care team. In line with most hospitals we do not have specific palliative care staff on site 24-hours a day, but there is always access to advice and support when needed and we have strong links with local hospices. We also run regular training courses for our medical and nursing staff, to help them understand the different needs of each patient and provide the best possible end-of-life care.”
