2009 - What a Year for the Friends of St Peter’s Hospital!

As 2009 draws to a close, this year in particular has proved to be an exceptional 12 months for the League of Friends of St Peter’s Hospital. Over the last year, the Friends have donated or committed record sums of money totalling £406,000 to St Peter’s.

This has been achieved through their support for various projects ranging from the purchase of four chairs at a cost of £316 for the maternity unit’s Joan Booker Ward to the princely sum of £60,000 for two Servo-ventilators for the Critical Care Unit. A summary of all of their purchases and support is shown in the attachment below.

Said Chairman of the St. Peter’s Hospital League of Friends, Jim McCall: “In addition to their direct donations to the Hospital the Friends will, this Christmas morning, carry out their long-standing tradition of going around the general hospital wards and presenting all patients with a small gift. Also, nurses and staff on duty over Christmas receive hampers of goodies - another £3,000 plus. In all, the total support given by the Friends to St Peter’s Hospital has reached some £406,000. Well Done, the Friends!

“This is a wonderful record and, without all of the efforts of the Committee and the shop and cafeteria staff and volunteers, this would certainly not have been possible. In the present day, these enterprises make up, by far, the main source of funding for the Friends. In addition, however, the Friends acknowledge, with gratitude, the recent receipt of two major bequests. These amounted to some £110,000. Such generosity is astonishing and thanks go to those people who, by such acts of kindness, have enabled the Friends to contribute so much. Donations, of course, also come in from members of the public and these are also very welcome.”

2009 has also seen the Friends hold its 500th meeting with a celebration at which past Committee Members and Chairmen were present, along with senior hospital management. From its very humble beginnings, in 1952, the Friends have progressed, through difficult times, to become a highly respected charity – highly respected by those, including hospital staff, who use the shop and cafeteria and respected by the senior managers and consultants who know that they can always turn to the Friends for assistance.

Added Jim: “Nevertheless, there are challenging times ahead. At present, the Friends are in the early throes of purchasing a new Electronic Point of Sales (EPOS) till system and are about to embark on a modernisation of the cafeteria. Both of these ventures (at a combined cost of around £50,000) will, it is hoped, bring the Friends’ facilities into the 21st century and enhance the service which they are proud to deliver to St Peter’s. With the continuing support of senior management throughout the hospital, the Friends will continue to operate its shop and cafeteria services and go into the future fully funded and prepared to support St Peter’s Hospital in whichever way they can.”

However, the Friends are currently seeking two new Committee Members – a Membership Secretary and Publicity and Communications Secretary. Anyone with an interest in either of these two posts should get in touch with Jim McCall, the Chairman at:-
