Dream is a reality for Midwife Louise
Written by Communications Team

For most people having to work on Christmas Day might not be ideal, but for Louise Higgs it is almost a dream come true!

Louise has had to work and study hard to make her dream a reality. This year December 25th will find her working as a junior midwife on the Labour Ward at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, where she hopes to have the chance to deliver a Christmas Day baby.

She was nearly a Christmas Day baby herself! Her mother’s first child, she was born on 18th December 30 years ago at Redhill General Hospital, in front of lots of student nurses.

Said Louise: “My Nan always wanted to go into nursing, but she had a large family instead! I have always had a keen interest in women’s health and had ways attracted to midwifery. So to now fulfil this ambition and look after women and their babies during this time is a great achievement for me.”

To achieve her ambition Louise spent three years training and qualified as a Registered General Nurse at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. She spent further two-and-a-half years there in gynaecology and women’s surgery before moving to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where she embarked on midwifery training, qualifying after 18 months. The first baby she delivered was a boy. She joined Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust in September 2008.

Said Louise: “As a nurse I worked on nights Christmas Eve and last year I worked on the night of Christmas Day as a midwife on the Labour Ward. I’m really looking forward to working on Christmas Day and I imagine there’s going to be a very nice atmosphere on the Labour Ward with everyone working together like a ward family. We are a good team anyway and all get on well – maternity assistants, midwives, consultants and everyone on the ward.”

The first baby to be born on Christmas Day at St. Peter’s Hospital spends the day in a special crib, decked out with white Broiderie Anglais lace and every baby born that day is given a small gift. Last year 13 babies were born on December 25th at St. Peter’s.
