Thoughtful gift for Breast Cancer Patients
Written by Communications Lead

Hair loss following chemotherapy could be a thing of the past for some cancer patients, thanks to a donation that has enabled the Breast Care Unit at Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust to purchase special cool cap equipment designed to reduce the risk of the sometimes distressing side-effect.

The equipment was paid for by a donation of £4,000 from Roger Brown, Master of Water Mead Lodge 8097 St. James’, London, and his wife Gale together with £7,200 from the sale of the 2008 “Alive & Kicking!” calendar. This “Pink” calendar was produced by supporters of the unit who also had great fun posing for the evening dress, black-tie photographs in the grounds of Foxhills Country Club, Ottershaw. Cllr Isobel Napper (Miss April) and Jo Mucklow (Miss June) of Virginia Water, with other breast cancer patients, had also produced a “Pink” calendar in 2005, raising £8,000.

Said Isobel Napper: “A diagnosis of breast cancer is bad enough and the thought of hair loss due to chemotherapy is an added distress.  Cool caps have been used for some time at Ashford hospital to avoid total hair loss. Now with these new funds, the breast unit has purchased two new, electronically controlled cool caps to keep the scalp temperature stable and reduce hair loss for many patients.

“We are very happy to continue supporting the breast unit, and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people in the community who have given their time, skills or money to enable us to produce these high quality calendars, which are also great fun!”

Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon, Ms Sunita Shrotria said: “We aim to provide the best care and treatment for our breast cancer patients.  This modern equipment will certainly benefit patients undergoing chemotherapy and will have a positive psychological effect on their wellbeing.  We are immensely grateful to the Calendar Ladies & Friends and to the Masons for their generous contributions to this unit.”
