Classes specially for fathers-to-be!
Written by Communications Lead

Men who are expecting to become a Dad in 2009 might like to know about the special classes that absolutely no women, except a midwife, are allowed to attend!

Dads-to-be-classes are being held in the Maternity Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital on the last Tuesday evening of each month – and the first session of 2009 is on Tuesday, 27 January. The “drop-in” sessions are held in the parent education room on the ground floor of the Abbey Wing by midwife parent education co-ordinators Rose Cooper and Naomi Warrington. There is no need to book.
Said Rose: “Naturally there is a lot of attention and information given to expectant mothers but we know from experience that many expectant dads have things to discuss and questions to ask. Our men-only sessions have proved very popular in the past and we’re looking forward to answering the questions of the 2009 dads-to-be and helping them enjoy the experience of becoming a father.”

The sessions cover what a dad can expect during the whole birth process, whether at home or at the St Peter’s Hospital Maternity Unit, and what is expected of a dad during a hospital birth.  They will find out about the team who will be caring for their partner, themselves and their baby. They will be advised how to support their partner when she is in labour at home or in hospital and what a dad can expect to see, hear and feel.

Added Rose: “There’s a practical side to the sessions, too. There may be an opportunity to  get hands on practice with nappy changing, baby bathing, cuddling and ‘winding’ a baby-sized doll. This approach aims to give the dads more confidence with handling their newborn. And, of course, to what happens next in the first few weeks after the baby is born.

Other topics for discussion during the programme are ‘baby blues’, post-natal depression, feeding and contraception.

There is no need to book. Unaccompanied dads-to-be are welcome on Tuesday 27 January 2009 at 19.30hrs- 21.30hrs in the Parent Education Room (ground floor), Abbey Wing, St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, KT16 0PZ.
