Fielding Ward re-opens at Ashford Hospital
Written by Communications Team

In order to improve services for patients and offer additional bed capacity, last week Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust re-opened Fielding ward at Ashford Hospital.

The ward has been refurbished to the very highest standards, meeting the latest guidance on infection control and elimination of mixed sex accommodation, and is scheduled for use by patients needing orthopaedic rehabilitation – for example following joint replacement surgery.

The finished ward has 22 beds, including 4 side rooms with ensuite facilities, which can be used to isolate patients in cases of cross-infection, or for other medical or individual patient reasons.  In addition, the use of new disposable curtains, wipe-down chairs and toilet and washing facilities on the bays all helps to improve infection control.  The ward is also able to accommodate bariatric patients with a shower-room suitable for use by patients over 18 stone in weight.

Acting Director of Nursing and Governance, Ruth Lallmahomed, commented:  “We are delighted to be able to re-open Fielding ward, which will provide patients requiring rehabilitation, particularly those in orthopaedics with a high quality environment to meet their needs.  The refurbished facilities are very impressive and comply with the latest guidance for helping to prevent the spread of infection, particularly important for our more vulnerable patients.

The increased bed numbers form part of our overall plans to improve our bed configuration across the Trust and will give us some valuable additional capacity.  Staff have worked extremely hard to get the ward ready in record time – in just over two months – which is a great achievement.”
