On Saturday 3rd July, maternity staff at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey hosted their annual picnic for families with multiple babies. Judi Linney, the President of the Twins and Multiple Births Association (TAMBA) and over 30 families attended to enjoy the glorious sunshine and a picnic on the lawn outside Abbey Wing. Naomi Warrington, Midwife, said: “After several years of having to re-locate the picnic inside because of bad weather, it was a real treat to be able to set up outside and enjoy the sunshine! We all had a fantastic afternoon and are looking forward to next year’s picnic already.” The twins that came ranged from three weeks to two years old and it was a great chance for the families to catch up. Naomi said: “Many of the couples already know each other from attending our specialist multiple birth antenatal classes before their babies were born, so it was an ideal opportunity for them to get together again and compare notes.” Jenny and John Durrant, with their twins William and Eleanor from Egham (left) Chris and Anne Howard, with their twins Zak and Scarlett from Weybridge (right) The specialist antenatal classes are run to prepare expecting parents for the challenge of looking after more than one baby. Explains Naomi: “Being a new parent is hard work for anybody but looking after twins or triplets can be especially overwhelming and tiring. TAMBA have released research which shows that mothers of multiple births are more likely to develop Post Natal Depression and that being better prepared, by attending specialist classes when pregnant, can reduce this risk.” “Being in touch with other parents in the same situation after the birth is also very important to support new mums and dads, which is why we host the annual picnic. We are proud of the unique and specialist service we offer at St Peter’s for these families, reflected by the fact we won a second Gold TAMBA award last year.” |
