A local hospital appeal has completed in record time thanks to generous donations from local supporters. In the last six months, fundraisers have been pulling out all the stops to raise funds to support the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Trans Oesophogeal Echocardiogram (TOE) Probe appeal for Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals and have raised an incredible £16,000. The appeal, which officially launched at the hospital at the end of June, needed to raise £16,000 to fund a Trans Oesophageal Echocardiogram probe (TOE probe) for use with the department’s new high resolution echocardiogram machine. ![]() This new piece of equipment was presented to Consultant Cardiologist Dr Ian Beeton on Tuesday 30th November and will allow cardiologists to capture information from the rear of the heart. Nearly every image of a heart shows the vital organ from the front and when an echocardiogram machine gives a frontal image it may mean the rib cage has obstructed some of the view. Dr Beeton explains: “Some structures at the rear of the heart are better seen from the back as the rib cage doesn’t get in the way, and there are no other structures to obscure the view. Only certain conditions present a need for this diagnostic tool and this new probe is compatible with both our older echocardiogram machines and our new high-resolution model.” “Providing this heart-screening equipment for the Trust compliments our expanding cardiology services, for the benefit of all our patients who come from a wide area even beyond the immediate boroughs of Runnymede, Spelthorne, Woking and Elmbridge.” Heather Hunt, Fundraising Volunteer Manager for the BHF in Surrey, is delighted to present the hospital with the TOE probe so quickly. She said: “We are so very grateful to everyone that has donated to this local appeal. Within six months we have raised enough money to support heart patients across the area. We wish the cardiology team well and hope that this state-of-the-art TOE probe helps them to continue to save lives locally.” The BHF will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2011.
