Transitional Care Unit
For Mothers and their Babies
Written by Children's Services Manager

The Transitional Care Unit is a small unit containing 6 beds for mothers and their babies who need extra nursing care.  It is based on the post natal ward but is part of the service provided by the Neonatal team.

The babies are cared for by their mothers who are supported by neonatal nurses, while the mothers receive obstetric care from the midwives.

Medical care is also provided by the neonatal medical team.

The main reasons for babies to be nursed in Transitional Care are for feeding problems or that they require intravenous antibiotic therapy.

Some babies who need to return to the hospital for follow up investigations, will be seen on Transitional Care by the medical team as day ward attenders.

The lead nurse for Transitional Care is Deputy Sister Therese Nursey, whilst responsibility for  the Unit remains with Matron Audrey Elmore, who can be contacted on telephone number 01932 723231
