Visiting the Chapel of Rest
Facilities for you at the Hospitals
Written by Bereavement Office

Both Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals have facilities for you to view the person who has died and the Bereavement Officer will make the necessary arrangements for you. Viewing is usually restricted to normal working hours.

In exceptional circumstances you may be able to view the person who had died outside normal working hours. This might be for religious or cultural reasons or because you live a very long distance from the hospital. In this case please ring the hospital switchboard, who will contact the site co-ordinator to see if it is possible to arrange a viewing.

Your chosen Funeral Director will also be able to arrange for you to visit their chapel of rest once funeral arrangements have been made.

It is not possible to visit the hospital chapel of rest/viewing room without an appointment being made. To avoid any distress please make arrangements before you come to hospital. The time you spend with the person who has died may sometimes be limited.

If the case has been referred to the coroner you will need to make arrangements for viewing through the Coroner’s officers.
