It is down to the hard work and commitment of our staff that we are in a position to apply for Foundation Trust status. As a Foundation Trust, we won’t be working in isolation and we will develop closer working relationships with other local acute hospitals and continue to build on the excellent clinical networks we have in Surrey and beyond.

Before NHS Trusts like Ashford & St. Peter’s can be authorised as NHS Foundation Trusts, there are three distinct phases of activity during the application and assessment process. We have passed the first two stages of the application and we expect to hear about whether our application has been successful in November 2010. We are working to a provisional authorisation date as an NHS Foundation Trust of December 1, 2010.
We are one of the first Trusts in the country to undertake a new Quality Assessment, overseen by the national regulator Monitor.
In preparation for authorisation, we have started the election process to create a Council of Governors. There is a dedicated section on the Council of Governors under the Foundation Trust heading.
Foundation Trust members receive a quarterly magazine called Members’ Matters, which highlights key developments in the Trust.
Since our last edition, a major policy White Paper entitled Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS has been published. It sets out a number of changes for the NHS, with a big emphasis on devolving power from Whitehall to patients and health professionals. The Government is encouraging Ashford & St. Peter’s to continue in our bid to become a Foundation Trust with our services commissioned by new GP groups in the future.
