Students following pre-registration programmes at EIHMS are based within a Locality. This means that the majority of clinical placements will be within this locality.   This benefits by giving the student a sense of belonging and allows the students to gain a greater understanding of the way in which health services are constructed and delivered. Locality 2 is also known as the North West Surrey Locality.

 

North West Surrey Locality largely comprises of NHS organisations (known as Trusts) that provide acute, community and primary care services to all individuals living within North West Surrey.

Community and Primary Care services

 

 

Provided by Surrey PCT which was formed on 1^st October 2006. The areas that were previously North Surrey PCT and the Woking half of the Surrey Heath and Woking PCT form part of Locality 2.

 

 

Mental Health services

 

 

Provided by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Trust, this is a large Trust that extends much wider than the North West Surrey area.

 

 

 

Locality 2 also has several placements within the independent sector. These placements are in a mixture of specialities (mental health, general adult etc) and therefore support students from all branches.

 

 

 

How are students allocated to Localities?

 

National Workforce planning informs the Department of Health how many nurses, midwives and Operating Department Practitioners the NHS will require in the future. This numbers is reviewed regularly. This number is then divided between the number of Higher Education Institutes (Universities) that provide nurse training. The Trusts that make up the Localities in Surrey then decide how many students their placements can support.  

 

EIHMS students will be based in one of five Localities:

North West Surrey

Locality 3

South West Surrey

Locality 4

West Surrey

Locality 5

West Sussex

 

When students commence their course they choose a Locality in which to be based.   Unfortunately, not all students can be placed in their first choice as the numbers across the Localities have to be balanced and some areas are more popular.

Each type of student follows a particular curriculum, many of them have shared components e.g. a Common Foundation Programme exists for all nursing students; they all follow the same first year.

 

Requirements are set by professional regulatory bodies that 50% of the programme content is delivered in practice (i.e. in practice placements).    The programmes are designed that not all students are out in placements at the same time, and similarly not all students are in classrooms at the University at the same time.
