Living in the Locality
There are several options available if you are relocating to the area
- Housing Associations work together with the NHS to manage properties on and off hospital sites.
- As part of your induction to the Locality an opportunity to view an empty property and meet with a Housing Officer will be arranged.
- Servite Housing Association manages the properties on site at both Ashford and St Peters Hospitals. Contact 01932 87 7592 / 2632
- Homewood Housing manages properties locally in towns such as Ottershaw, Chertsey and Addlestone www.homewood.org.uk
- Or alternatively, check out local papers and, adverts for details of letting agents or rooms to share

The table below lists the current Placement areas within Ashford and St Peters Hospitals NHS Trust. We are currently updating the information available for students; soon you will be able to download the relevant Student Induction and Learning Packs by clicking on the Placement name.

It is intended that these packs will form part of your induction so you will need to download them.

Mentors
What is the role of the mentor?
A mentor is a qualified professional (Nurse, Midwife etc) who has a mentoring qualification (English National Board 998/7, Mentor Preparation module or Certificate of Education).

Mentors who really make a positive difference to a student's life do so by remembering that they are a person and not just a student.
Your mentor is there to help you learn whilst on your placement. Learning is YOUR responsibility; your mentor will faciliate.
Elements of the role
- Teaching and support of learning
- Assessment and giving feedback to students
- Developing effective learning environments and student learning support systems
- Reflective practice and personal development
- Contribution to the design and planning of learning activities
Team Mentoring
Within Locality 2 students are mentored using a team approach. Each student has a mentor who is responsible for the student's placement experience, and one or more associate mentors.
What is an Associate Mentor?
The associate mentor is a qualified practitioner (nurse/midwife/AHP/ODP) who has not attended any specific mentor preparation module at a University (ENB 998/Mentor Preparation/Certificate of Education.)
The role of the Associate Mentor
- To assist the qualified mentor to mentor a student within a team
- The associate mentor will liaise with the Mentor regarding the student's progress and needs
- An associate mentor will work closely with the student, guide, counsel, demonstrate skills, assess competence, encourage reflection, act as a role model, etc, particularly when the mentor is not on duty.
- The associate mentor can sign in the portfolio that a student has achieved learning outcomes
- The associate mentor cannot sign the summative assessment

Mentor of the Year
To celebrate the superb experience and supported offered by mentors, the Strategic Health Authority hosts an annual award ceremony. This is your chance to say thank you. Mentor of the Year is now part of a new category in the South East Coast (regional) Best of Health Awards.

Library Services
The Health Sciences Library at Ashford and St Peters Hospitals is an excellent resource. You will become registered with the Library as part of your Induction. Click below to enter their website

Policies and Resources

IT Access
Students are able to access the Trust Net and the internet from computers at nursing stations in Wards and departments. In addition, there are PCs available in both Hospital Libraries.

The RCN produced a toolkit for students to help you get the best from your practice placements. Download it here.
Personal Resources and Support
EIHMS Based Support
Each placement is supported by a link tutor from EIHMS and all students have a Personal Tutor whom you can go to for any issue or advice.
There are also Counselling Services for students at EIHMS.

Common Room
As well as having PCs for you to use for study, the Student Common room is equipped with a TV and video/DVD player and facilities for you to make hot drinks and food.
Occupational Health
Routine Occupational Health services is provided by the University, your student handbook contains contact details. However, if you need Occupational Health advice whilst in placement you are able to contact them. You will receive information on this during your Induction.
Pastoral Services
There is a multi faith pastoral team based at Ashford and St Peters Hospitals who staff and students can contact if support is needed.

Dyslexia
Recruitment
It is quite likely that you will want to earn some money working part time, especially during your holidays. You can apply to work ’bank’ as a Health Care Assistant or Support Worker with NHS Professionals – the NHS in house agency.
