Trust receives best ‘risk’ rating by CQC in new report
In a report published today (24th October 2013) by the Care Quality Commission, Ashford and St Peter’s has been rated in the lowest (i.e. best) ‘risk’ band for a number of important quality indicators. This report is based on a new process for monitoring quality in hospitals which relates to five key questions the CQC is asking all services as part of their new inspection regime – are they safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led?
The CQC has prepared individual reports (known as an Intelligent Monitoring Reports) for each acute Trust across the country which will be updated on an ongoing basis. These are based on a number of indicators of quality, including infection control rates, mortality rates, waiting times, staff surveys and staffing levels. These reports will act as early intelligence for the CQC, giving a detailed view on how a hospital is performing, as it prepares to inspect individual hospitals under its new inspection regime. Once a full inspection has been undertaken, each hospital will receive an Ofsted-style rating - outstanding, very good, satisfactory or inadequate.
Chief Nurse at the Trust, Suzanne Rankin, explains more: “The CQC has looked closely at 86 individual indicators of quality for our hospitals and, based on our data, has categorised us into the lowest ‘risk’ band (band 6). This is excellent news for our patients and reflects our commitment to improving quality in our hospitals. For example, one of the indicators relates to infection control which is an area we are performing really well on. It’s now been just over a year since we reported a hospital acquired MRSA bacteraemia and, since the beginning of April, we have only reported 4 cases of clostridium difficile – our best performance ever and one which puts us right at the top of the South East Coast area. Other areas we are doing well on include reducing harm in our hospitals and good mortality rates.”
